Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS)

Overview

Mild deviation is common and asymptomatic. Severe DNS may require surgical correction (septoplasty) if it leads to chronic symptoms.

Causes

  • Congenital deformity
  • Trauma (sports, accidents)
  • Poor post-surgical healing
  • Uneven growth during puberty

Symptoms

  • Nasal congestion (one side)
  • Recurrent sinusitis or infections
  • Snoring, mouth breathing
  • Nosebleeds
  • Headache or facial pressure

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Nasal endoscopy, CT scan
  • Treatment:
    • Decongestants, antihistamines (for symptom relief)
    • Nasal steroid sprays
    • Septoplasty: Surgery to straighten the septum

Treatment: Traditional Medicine

  • Ayurveda: Nasya (nasal drops), Triphala ghrita
  • Siddha: Herbal nasal drops and fomentation

  • Nutraceuticals: Anti-inflammatory herbs, Vitamin C

Caution

  • Surgery is elective but beneficial in chronic sufferers

Prevention

  • Prevent facial injury (helmets, sports gear)
  • Early treatment of childhood nasal injuries
