Overview

Commonly caused by rotavirus, norovirus, or contaminated food. Usually self-limiting but can be serious in infants and elderly.

Causes

  • Viral or bacterial infection
  • Contaminated food or water
  • Person-to-person spread

Symptoms

  • Diarrhea, vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Mild fever
  • Dehydration

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Clinical symptoms; stool test if needed
  • Treatment:
    • Oral rehydration therapy (ORT)
    • Zinc supplements (especially in children)
    • Antipyretics

  • Siddha: Nilavembu, coriander decoction
  • Unani: Astringents, Sharbat Zanjabeel
  • TCM: Agastache and ginger-based herbal tea

  • Nutraceuticals: Electrolytes, zinc, vitamin A

Caution
