Ectopic Pregnancy

Overview

Ectopic pregnancies cannot result in a viable baby and can rupture, leading to internal bleeding.

Causes

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Previous ectopic pregnancy
  • IVF or IUD use

Symptoms

  • Sharp abdominal pain
  • Missed period with light bleeding
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Shoulder tip pain (due to internal bleeding)
  • Low blood pressure (if ruptured)

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Transvaginal ultrasound, β-hCG levels
  • Treatment:
    • Methotrexate injection (if early and unruptured)
    • Laparoscopic surgery (salpingectomy/salpingostomy)
    • Blood transfusion if ruptured

Treatment: Traditional Medicine

(Not used alone—supportive after emergency care)

  • Ayurveda: Ashoka, Shatavari for recovery
  • Siddha/Unani: Herbal uterine tonics post-surgery
  • Homeopathy: Secale cor, Apis (supportive use only)
