Nasal Polyps

Overview

Common in asthma, allergies, and chronic sinusitis. Large polyps can obstruct nasal airflow and reduce smell.

Causes

  • Chronic rhinosinusitis
  • Allergies
  • Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD)
  • Cystic fibrosis (in children)

Symptoms

  • Blocked nose, breathing difficulty
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Runny nose, postnasal drip
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Snoring

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Nasal endoscopy, CT scan
  • Treatment:
    • Nasal corticosteroid sprays (fluticasone, mometasone)
    • Oral steroids for severe cases
    • Surgery (polypectomy, FESS)

Treatment: Traditional Medicine

  • Ayurveda: Nasya with Anu taila, turmeric inhalation
  • Siddha: Nasal fumigation, Thylams
  • Unani: Herbal nasal drops; Hab-e-Banafsha
  • TCM: Herbs to reduce dampness and phlegm (e.g., Cang Er Zi)
  • Homeopathy: Teucrium marum verum, Lemna minor
  • Nutraceuticals: Quercetin, Vitamin D, Bromelain

Caution

  • Long-standing nasal blockage may affect breathing and sleep
  • Polyps can recur even after surgery

Prevention
