Infantile Colic

Overview

Defined as crying >3 hours/day, >3 days/week, for >3 weeks. Exact cause is unknown; possible contributors include gas, immature gut, or sensitivity.

Causes

  • Gas or intestinal discomfort
  • Overfeeding or underfeeding
  • Cow's milk protein sensitivity
  • Parental stress, overstimulation

Symptoms

  • Intense crying episodes (often evening)
  • Clenched fists, arched back, bloated abdomen
  • Difficulty consoling the baby
  • Normal growth and feeding

Treatment: Modern Medicine

  • Diagnosis: Based on clinical history (rule out other causes)
  • Treatment:
    • Reassurance and parental support
    • Anti-gas drops (Simethicone)
    • Probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus reuteri)
    • Avoid cow’s milk (if allergy suspected)

Treatment: Traditional Medicine

  • Ayurveda: Gripe water with Ajwain, Hing paste on abdomen
  • Siddha: Omam water, Elumichai thylam massage
  • Unani: Arq-e-Badian, mild carminatives
  • TCM: Fennel, Ginger decoctions (for mothers)
  • Homeopathy: Chamomilla, Colocynthis, Mag phos
  • Nutraceuticals: Probiotics, Vitamin D (as per pediatric advice)

Caution

  • Rule out reflux, infection, or milk allergy
  • Avoid giving honey to infants <1 year

Prevention

  • Burp baby after feeds
  • Avoid overfeeding
  • Reduce maternal dairy intake (if breastfeeding and baby is sensitive)
